Krugman is right. If the young and healthy are allowed to opt out and only the old and sick participate, and if (and this is a big “If”) premiums are going to cover ALL expenses, won’t the premiums of those who participate HAVE to cover ALL their medical expenses?

The whole concept of health insurance envisions the young and healthy subsidizing the costs of the old and not-so-healthy. As the young get older and their health deteriorates, there will be new generations of the young and healthy to subsidize their medical expenses.

Now, find a country that has universal health care that doesn’t subsidize its system with taxes. And show me one that allows the young to opt out and not pay premiums and then opt in when they develop medical issues.

In theory, both rolling back the Bush tax cuts and increasing the capital gains tax will increase tax revenues and reduce the deficits. But theories often don’t work the way they’re supposed to. When the Bush tax cuts were enacted, tax revenues actually increased, and when capital gains tax rates have been reduced, revenues from capital gains also increased.

Almost all economists say it’s a bad idea to raise taxes in a recession. Lower tax revenues together with increased spending will drive our deficits up, and we can’t afford higher deficits.

China is already talking about meeting with Japan and South Korea because they are concerned about the safety of their investments in U.S. treasury securities. Other countries are, too.

What happens if we continue spending and investors, both our own and those from other countries, refuse to buy any more of our treasuries? Our investors, including retirees, have taken body blows due to the market drop, so very few of them will have any capital gains to pay taxes on, and they will not be sitting on a lot of idle cash to invest in treasuries – or anything else.

Senator Obama needs to talk to Paul Krugman.

Tax cuts for the middle class? I think income cuts are much more likely.
