Are white cats more prone to health problems?

Meg B asked:

I am thinking about getting a new kitten. This one kitten that i’m interested in is all white. The only thing is I don’t have enough money to take care of a constantely sick cat. So if white cats are more prone to health problems could someone tell me if they are and what kind of sickness they are more likely to get. (ex. deafness, blindness…etc.)

I have heard that they are more prone to blindness. Other than that guess they are alright.

I was told by a vet that they usually are deaf, but I had one that was not.

  3. Caitlin Says:

Blue eyed white MALE cats are deaf.
I guess the combination of genes is what does it.

To be honest I don’t have a scientific answer but I can give you a personal answer. I have 2 cats and one of them is all white, I hand raised her since she was 3 days old. She has never been seriously sick, she only had a cold once. She is almost 2 years old and she is as healthy as she can be.

We once had a white, blue eyed, pink nose & ears. Pure white right? But in very bright light on his tail you could see what I came to refer to as “ghost stripes”. He was quite healthy. Good luck with your new kitty if you decide to take it.

  8. Caitlin Says:

I heard they were more prone to deafness.

  9. Jared Says:

Yeah I’ve heard some white cats with blue eyes are deaf.

White cats are more prone to being deaf or becoming deaf. I once had a white cat named Selest, and the poor thing was completely deaf. White cats do have a higher risk of blindness. But the most thing you must be aware of is sunburn and skin cancer. White cats’ fur is more “attracted” to sunlight, and the white pigment absorbs the sunlight, causing rashes inside and on the tips of a white cat’s ears. If this rash occurs repeatedly, it may turn into cancer.

THey are prone to blindness, deafness and skin cancer.

  12. Diane Says:

Prone to deafness if they have blue eyes.
